Designing EPDM Safety Flooring Play Area for Villa Theresa School
Project type
Kids playground
Date
2020
Location
Pedder Road,Mumbai
This vibrant and child-friendly playground project was specially designed for toddlers and young children aged 1 to 6 years at Villa Theresa School. The focus was on safety, sensory engagement, and playful learning, achieved through the use of EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) rubber flooring — a durable, non-toxic, and impact-absorbing surface ideal for young children.
Key Features:
Safe and Shock-Absorbent Surface:
The entire play area is covered with soft, high-quality EPDM rubber granules, ensuring a cushioned surface that minimizes the risk of injury from falls.
Vibrant, Multi-Colored Design:
The flooring showcases an engaging, colorful palette — with bright blues, reds, greens, oranges, and yellows — arranged in flowing patterns to stimulate visual interest and imagination.
Educational and Thematic Graphics:
Integrated into the EPDM flooring are playful and educational motifs, such as birds, flowers, and a cartoon-like blue bunny. These elements help build early visual recognition and storytelling skills in children.
Child-Appropriate Play Equipment:
The space is equipped with:
Swings (with toddler safety seats),
Spring riders shaped like animals,
A small merry-go-round,
A slide, and
Balancing ladders and climbers — all age-appropriate and safely mounted over the EPDM surface.
Natural Elements and Shade:
Existing trees have been beautifully integrated into the play area design, offering shade and a connection to nature while maintaining full safety compliance around their trunks.
Secure and Colorful Fencing:
The perimeter of the area is enclosed with green and red metal fencing for both safety and aesthetics, creating a cheerful yet secure environment.
